Arenas pleads guilty to ONE count of FELONY gun possession. (He had 4 guns)
Prosecutors, in line with his plea deal, promised to seek only ONE count (that's done with) and agreed to sentencing between SIX MONTHS and TWO YEARS as per the same plea deal. Final sentence is up to the judge. Sentencing will happen in 8 weeks. But, ya know, he's just a fun loving guy just trying to have a good time! Gil got railroaded man! Haters! LOL There is no joke in joking around with guns. There is no joke in making light of it on the court. There is no joke in a man who children look up to thinks playing around with guns is funny. Goodbye, Gil, you were only a glorified Jamal Crawford anyway....but your attitude couldn't hold Jamal's jock. Good riddance! His fanboys are going to be upset now aren't they...but I've noticed that ship be sinking! (from reading many forums and blogs on the issue) ![]() ![]() |

If I make over $2 million a year as an entertainer.....I would always stay strap.
I dont condone Arenas or anyone who want to "show-off" their guns, b/c if I pull my gun (or guns) out its for a serious reason to where it will be used. |

Here's the odd thing, JT, when Arenas was told by the judge that when he plead guilty, what did he think the max was he could get?
Arenas replied "6-24 months". Judge said, "No, 5 years." Arenas nodded. ---THIS leads credence to the fact that the plea agreement was 6-24 months.---- Otherwise...where did Arenas get those numbers? You follow me? So, despite the media saying that the prosecution called for "no more than six months" I'm not so sure...given Arenas' comments during that moment. Regardless, it is up to the Judge, and I highly doubt Arenas simply goes free. Remember, he has a prior misdemeanor conviction for a gun. Remember, he mocked authority on twitter and during a pre-game. I think a Judge might look at this and say "This guy just doesn't get it, well, I'll FORCE him to get it." And I wouldn't be surprised if at the very least he goes away for 30 days. Remember, JT, this is federal court. The Judge can do whatever he wants, and, it cannot be appealed! Vick's prosecutors recommended 12-18 months. Judge said no, 23 months. And it became so. ....we'll see what happens come March 26th. I doubt he just goes free. You can't just play with guns. Especially being in the public eye. Especially in DC where it is a felony to carry a weapon even if registered! You can live in DC, register that weapon, but if you take it outside your home it's now a felony possession of a firearm. That is law there. Arenas' gun was not registered in DC. So that makes it even worse. It's an illegal weapon according to DC protocol. Now, the NBA will frown upon this because he took it to the NBA workplace. Stephen Jackson, Deltonte West - it was on their "own time". This one was in an NBA locker room! He's fucked. He should be. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Cosmic; 01-16-2010 at 09:27 PM. |

The fact that a sentencing date was set leads me to believe that a sentence will indeed be levied. Otherwise, why waste the court's time? It doesn't make sense to do so. If he wasn't going to jail Arenas he would have dismissed him that very day with his probation conditions. The fact that he set a new date means he will be looking deeper into Arenas behavior to determine what sentence he will give him. Yeah, unfortunately, I am indeed speaking from experience. Again, unfortunately, not from the standpoint of a multi-millionaire athlete that played with guns, but, well, we take the hand that is dealt us. ![]() ![]() |

He'll most likely get 30 days or something, just as a message.
It's such a pain to put somebody high profile in prison though. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Washington Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation on Monday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun possession charge stemming from a locker room incident with teammate Gilbert Arenas. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop a second misdemeanor charge of attempting to carry a pistol without a license.
Crittenton's plea deal could affect the legal and professional interests of Arenas, who on Jan. 15 pleaded guilty to a felony for carrying an unlicensed pistol outside a home or business. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 26. Arenas faces up to five years in prison, though prosecutors will reportedly ask that he not receive more than six months. Crittenton's reported account of what happened on the team flight and in the Wizards' locker room will likely be shared with the court. It will not portray Arenas in a positive light. Arenas, according to the account, suggested that he and Crittenton resolve a card game argument by having Arenas either set Crittenton's vehicle ablaze or shoot Crittenton in the face. Two days later in the Wizards' locker room, Arenas allegedly positioned four guns in front of Crittenton's locker and left written instruction that Crittenton pick one of the guns. Arenas maintains the incidents on the flight and in the locker room were part of a joke, though Crittenton's alleged reaction -- Crittenton said he felt genuinely threatened and only carried and pulled out his own gun because he feared for his life -- suggests at a minimum that it offended him or that he took Arenas' threats at face value. D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin, who will sentence Arenas, may regard Arenas' alleged behavior as so irresponsible that it warrants time behind bars. Crittenton will also meet with NBA commissioner David Stern, who has suspended Arenas indefinitely. Crittenton's comments during the meeting could damage Arenas' chances for reinstatement if he portrays Arenas as a dangerous bully or aggressor. The Wizards may also find that Crittenton's comments lend justification for a termination of Arenas' contract under Clause 16 of the Uniform Player Contract, a topic I detailed in a previous column. Arenas, however, will have opportunities to speak with Judge Morin, as well as with Stern and Wizards officials. Arenas will likely maintain that what took place was a joke that went array, that he never intended to hurt or legitimately threaten anyone, and that he is genuinely sorry for what happened. It will be interesting to see whether any witnesses, either from the flight or locker room, emerge, as they may be able to provide the situational context that would corroborate either Crittenton or Arenas. ![]() ![]() |

arenas is going to be jailed, for the same reason Plaxico was... they are going to make an example of a high-profile person in order to prove that they're "tough on guns"... yes, both of them did something wrong, and yes, they both deserve punishment for their crimes... but i think the difference is, if they were just regular people, they'd have gotten probation and not jail time

I'm doubtful about that, PK. Usually it's the celebs who get off more. Sure, they want at least one example made, but no private citizen is getting away with what those two did without jail time.
Plaxico's sentence was a little long IMO but any citizen would have gotten at least six months. It's just that the mayor railed on it and made it so high profile and DEMANDED that he get time that it happened. Yet, I wouldn't go free if I shot myself in the leg in a night club in NYC. I am absolutely going to jail and losing my job. Same with if I were Arenas. If I got into an argument with co-workers in a limo on the way home from a meeting and exchanged "I'm going to shoot you in the face and burn your car" comments...and then days later I bring guns to my cubicle and place them in the co-workers cubicle telling him to pick one. I'm going to jail and I'm losing my job. ![]() ![]() |
